Fall 2008Spring 2009Slide-Tackling Rule UpdateIn the Fall Season of 2006, slide-tackling was banned from NWRGSL play at all levels. At the October 2007 League Meeting, this ruling was revisited and slide-tackling will be reallowed starting in the Spring Season of 2008. However, referees are reminded that they may still award an indirect free kick for anything that they deem to be "Dangerous Play", including improperly performed slide-tackles, and that making contact with an opponent before contacting the ball is still a direct free kick foul. The following rules and definitions adopted by the League are still
in effect for the Fall Season of 2007: If both of a player's feet leave the ground
with the intent of tackling the ball, from behind, in front, or from the side of
another player and, in the opinion of the referee, the tackle is deemed to be
dangerous to the surrounding players, the referee shall award an indirect free-kick
to the opposing team at that postition on the field.
A player with both feet off the ground, that makes contact with another player is to be considered dangerous play and will result in a direct free-kick. Message from the Referee SchedulerThe number one question being asked by all of our teams is: Why didn't my match have a referee last weekend? The answer to this question is simple mathematics:
What this means is that across the entire league, there is really only a pool of 15 "floating" referees who are willing to travel to pick up a game that fits their schedule, 21 additional referees who will pick up extra matches on a given weekend, but are stuck at a particular field (typically, these are youths without transportation), and 17 additional referees who are "home" referees only. 15 traveling referees from 300 teams is a dismal 5% representation for our League. On the bright side, these 53 referees managed to cover 183 of the 300 matches (61%) between them for the first two weekends this Spring. But, the next time your team goes without a referee for one of its matches, perhaps one of your parents will decide that it is finally time to "bite the bullet" and obtain their certification and your team will no longer be one of the 82% of our teams that has to hope someone else is providing the referee next weekend. We like to hear good comments about our referees too, but if there was a problem be sure to fill out this Referee Assessment Form and mail it to the NWRGSL office. |
